The Shenk Gerontology Research Award

This award was created to honor our founding director, Dr. Dena Shenk, and her 24 years of service to the Gerontology Program. This award will provide one-time annual research funding for a Gerontology MA, Certificate, or Minor student with a 3.5 GPA or better. Up to $500 may be awarded annually. This is not renewable.

Scholarship Criteria

Student must be engaged in their own original research in the field of aging. Student must be actively enrolled in the Gerontology Certificate, IDST BA Gerontology Concentration, or the Gerontology Minor. Student must submit a detailed budget outlining the need for the funding as well as submit their transcript, a CV or resume, an essay outlining goals and achievements, and a letter of recommendation from their research committee chair or another member.

The NMR Scholarship

The NMR Gerontology Graduate Scholarship is named in honor of Nora Belle Crum Nelms (1881 – 1958); Willie Minerva Davis Wimberly (1884 – 1969); and Ruth Katherine Drummond Dorminey (1901 – 1991); three extraordinary women who lived in a time when the idea of graduate education for women did not exist.

Scholarship Criteria

The Scholarship Committees will take all of the following into consideration: Applicants’ academic and professional achievement and goals that reflect dedication to the field of Gerontology; and financial need. To be eligible, the student must be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Gerontology at the time of application, must complete a minimum of 6 credits in gerontology during the academic year of the award, and remain active in the program.

Dr. Jeannine S. Skinner Memorial Scholarship

Awards are for research and/or student travel. This is available to Gerontology Graduate Certificate Students. Deadline is December 5th for the following academic year.

SOUTHMINSTER GERONTOLOGY GA GRANT

To support a graduate student through a Graduate Assistant position in the Gerontology Program.

Criteria:

  • GPA at least 3.0
  • A minimum of 3 Gerontology credit hours per term
  • Accepted into the certificate program in Gerontology
  • In good academic standing
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in aging services or with aging populations.

* We welcome donations to any of these funds as a way to continue to support Gerontology Students at UNC Charlotte.
